A general ophthalmology consultation is a thorough assessment of your eye health, using the latest diagnostic imaging and a treatment plan tailored to you. It's the right starting point if you've been referred, or if you have a concern that needs specialist attention.

Dr Leong's expertise spans medical retina, glaucoma, uveitis and inherited retinal disease — conditions where precise diagnosis and careful, ongoing management make the difference. He was a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Wellington and Hutt Hospitals from 2022 to 2026.

Common questions

What happens at a general eye assessment?
We take a full history, examine your eyes and use imaging where needed, then Dr Leong explains what he finds and your options. Allow up to two hours, and note your eyes may be dilated, which blurs vision for a few hours — so it's best not to drive yourself home.
Do I need a referral?
A referral from your GP or optometrist helps us understand your history, but if you'd like to arrange a consultation directly, call the clinic on 04 470 7663 and we'll guide you through it.
Is a consultation covered by insurance?
Many policies cover specialist eye consultations, though cover varies by plan — it's worth checking with your insurer. Call us and we can explain what to expect.
Should I bring anything?
Bring your glasses (and prescription if you have it), a list of any medications, and your referral letter if you have one. If your eyes are likely to be dilated, arrange not to drive yourself home.
