5 signs it's time to see an eye specialist

The Eye Clinic3 min read

Our eyes change as we get older, and most of it is nothing to worry about. But some changes are the eye's way of asking for attention. Here are five worth acting on.

1. A sudden increase in floaters or flashes

A few floaters are normal, but a sudden shower of new ones — especially with flashes of light — can occasionally signal a tear in the retina, which is best treated quickly.

2. A shadow or curtain across your vision

A dark shadow or curtain moving across your sight can be a sign of a retinal detachment. This needs urgent attention, so don't wait to see if it settles.

3. Straight lines that look wavy or bent

When door frames or lines of text start to look wavy or distorted, it can point to a change at the macula — the central part of the retina. It's worth getting checked promptly.

4. Gradual loss of side vision

Glaucoma often creeps in without any symptoms, quietly narrowing your side vision. Because you can't feel it happening, regular checks are the best way to catch it early — especially if it runs in your family.

5. Cloudy or blurry vision that's getting worse

Vision that's slowly turning cloudy, dim or hazy is commonly a cataract — and it's very treatable. If a new pair of glasses no longer does the trick, it's worth an assessment.
