Short-sightedness (myopia) in children is becoming more common, and there's growing interest in ways to slow it down — including a newer approach called repeated low-level red-light therapy. It's promising, but it's also still emerging, so it's worth understanding clearly. Here's a measured look.

What red-light therapy involves

Repeated low-level red-light therapy (sometimes shortened to RLRL) uses a desktop device that a child looks into for a short session, usually twice a day, at home. The idea is that gentle red light may slow the eye's growth. Studies — largely from overseas — have reported encouraging results in slowing myopia progression.

It's one of several tools for managing myopia, alongside approaches like specialised spectacle and contact lenses and low-dose atropine drops.

What the evidence does and doesn't say

The early research is promising, but it's still a relatively new therapy: questions remain about the best long-term use, how lasting the effect is once treatment stops, and long-term safety. Reputable clinicians treat it as an option to consider carefully and monitor closely — not a guaranteed fix.
